Connect via Perth and arrive in Newman, the regional centre of the East Pilbara. Meet your Program Leaders on arrival, settle into camp and undertake a cultural orientation and workshop.

Spend five days with Martu leaders and rangers through our partner organisation, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ). KJ preserves Martu culture and builds strong, sustainable Martu communities. Camp out in the desert on Martu country and fully immerse yourself in Martu life. Hunt and gather bush foods, hike to waterholes and learn first-hand about Martu history and culture. Get to know Martu leaders on a personal level, hear stories of the first contact people had with white man in the desert and build a deep understanding of traditional and contemporary life in this part of Australia.

You’ll also be involved in a community project and assist rangers with land management tasks. Finish back in Newman by visiting the local arts centre. It’s impossible to script how powerful and impactful this experience will be!

Spend two days exploring the magnificent Karijini National Park, one of Australia’s hidden wonders. Hike through gorges, climb through chasms, bathe in tranquil pools and swim under waterfalls.

• Customisation Example: Extend your trip by three days by travelling across to Coral Bay to snorkel with manta rays on Ningaloo Reef. Depart from Exmouth instead of Newman.

Rising early, today we’ll make our way back to Newman, fly back to Perth and connect onto your flight home. Your Rustic leaders will farewell you in Newman when you depart.
