Welcome to Rustic Pathways in Fiji!
Rustic Pathways is the leader in student travel in Fiji. Over the past 20+ years we have developed a wonderful range of exciting and enlightening programs that immerse our students in Fijian life. Operating from three unique and picturesque bases – a tropical retreat on remote Nacula Island, a traditional bure nestled deep in the Nausori Highlands and an Eco-Lodge that overlooks peaceful Momi Bay – we offer many wonderful opportunities to explore Fiji’s beautiful tropical islands and get to know the friendly locals. Our love for Fijian culture and our deep respect for the people of these magnificent islands are echoed throughout our extensive community service and adventure trips, which both educate and challenge our students.
Your Group Journey Through Fiji Islands
We custom design our Journeys to meet your school’s requirements, so please contact us to discuss the type of experience you are looking for. As a general guide, here are some of the potential elements of your Journey through Fiji:
Rustic Pathways has developed various partnerships with communities, villages and local organisations all throughout Fiji. With some of the world’s most welcoming people, the service initiatives are both rewarding and very helpful to the local people. Some of our service projects that you could support include:
Classrooms, Chalk and Chatter: Teach English to eager school children alongside helpful Fijian teachers as well as playing games and singing songs that improve students’ English pronunciation and fluency.
Environmental Service and Sustainability: Help monitor, maintain and preserve Fiji’s magnificent natural environment. Participate in beach clean-ups, plant trees and mangroves in an effort to help reforest and prevent erosion.
After-School Enrichment: Design and lead weekend activities from arts and crafts to relay races that offer skills building for all involved.
Home-Cooked Meals: Cook delicious Fijian and Indian dishes with our staff and friends and deliver the nutritious and tasty food to children, families and the elderly.
Medical Aid and Assistance: Visit rural nursing stations to help dispense donations and provide basic medical supplies. Lead interactive workshops about dental care and hygiene, volunteer at local health care facilities and spend time with friendly patients.
Hammers, Nails, and Brushes: Build toilets and other facilities to improve health and sanitation in a traditional Fijian Village with the help of local villagers. Improve area schools, construct playground equipment for students at the nearby kindergartens and paint colourful murals alongside local students to brighten their learning environments.
Computers are the Future: Help Fijian school children develop basic computer skills and become computer literate.
Plaster, Paint and Pencils: Inspire creativity and imagination in young minds by running art classes and activities for local kids.
Marine Ecosystem Monitoring: Work alongside marine conservation advocates to undertake ecosystem monitoring and restoration projects such as transect surveys, Biomass estimates, coral and fish ID, mangrove planting and seagrass monitoring.
Village School Service: Work alongside locals to build a remote school in the Fijian Highlands.
Education and Cultural Exploration
Over the past two decades Rustic Pathways has been facilitating students learning about the rich and diverse culture of the Fijian Islands. With a cannibalistic history, Fiji is now known for being one of the friendliest nations in the world. Its unique blend of Hindu and Fijian cultural practices make this tropical paradise a great place to get to know the local people. You may like to incorporate some of the following experiences into your Journey:
Kava Ceremonies: Participate in a formal sevusevu ceremony (a traditional welcoming ceremony) and begin to learn about the amazing culture in Fiji. Dressed in a sulu (traditional Fijian sarong or skirt) and sitting around the kava circle, begin to learn that it is more than just the world-renowned beaches that make Fiji special.
Cultural Dances: Learn and participate in a special performance of a traditional Fijian dance by locals.
Lovo: At this traditional Fijian feast, cooked underground for hours, you can sample some of the fine island food on offer.
Kava & Music: Fijian people are known for having wonderful voices and a great musical talent. Sit around the kava bowl and share stories with the locals as they sing traditional Fijian songs as well as some chart toppers!
Adventure and Challenge
Adventure and challenge is inherent to every Journey, however,
if you are looking to physically challenge your students through a specific activity, you may opt to include:
Kayak, Sail, And Snorkel: Dive into the warm Pacific Ocean waters of Fiji and try your hand at a number of marine adventure activities.
Swim with Manta Rays (seasonal): A unique opportunity to get up close and personal with these huge marine creatures, you won’t want to get out of the water!
Surfing: Try your hand at riding some waves at any one of the awesome surf breaks around Fiji.
Island Hopping: Jump from island to island in our sturdy long-hull boats and explore the tropical islands that this country is known for.
PADI Open Water Certification: Dive in clear Pacific water and swim around the tropical fish and coral reefs while you earn your PADI Open Water Certificate in sunny paradise.
Sky Diving: Test yourself as you prepare to jump out of a plane at 14,000ft over the beautiful Pacific Ocean.
Sigatoka Sand Dunes: Visit Fiji’s first National Park and take a walk, run, or tumble down the giant Sigatoka Sand Dunes.
Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pools: Bathe yourself in the warm waters of the Sabeto Hot Springs and cover yourself in the Mud to cleanse the skin. You will feel years younger!
There are various accommodation options that we can offer in Fiji;
it depends on how “rustic” you would like your Journey to be.
South Pacific Eco-Lodge: The ground level contains a kitchen, office, large dining area, and game room with billiards and table tennis. The House also features a large deck leading to an infinity-edge swimming pool. The grounds have extensive gardens, sports fields, and meditation decks tucked among fruit trees and swaying palms. Rooms are divided between dormitory-style bedrooms on the second level of the main lodge and several smaller bures, or cabins, scattered throughout the property. Bathrooms are modern, with flushing toilets and solar-powered hot-water showers.
Highlands Immersion & Service Base: The Highlands Base includes both our Village Bure, and our Farm House. The Village Bure is a traditional Fijian-style home designed to provide a central place to share time and meals. The Farm House offers the opportunity to engage with locals in daily life in this stunning valley. Programs that visit our Highlands Base allow students to live alongside local families, follow the rhythms of their daily lives, and get involved in our service initiatives.
Somosomo Islands Base: Located on a breathtaking stretch of pure white sand, Toba Totoka is a slice of heaven in the South Pacific. We have worked to make this base a sustainable and eco-friendly place that allows us to live in harmony with the surrounding environment. From sleeping in large safari style tents, eating freshly caught seafood, growing organic produce and developing positive partnerships with our village neighbours, this base truly embraces simple island living.
